LOS ANGELES – Tuesday night, Jonathan Broxton said he felt fine. Wednesday morning, he admitted that his right elbow isn't where it should be.
Friday, he was placed on the DL.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt were watching video of Broxton's release point on Tuesday night when trainer Stan Conte came in and told them Broxton reported pain after arriving at the ballpark Wednesday morning.
"Then Broxton came in and told us the same thing," said Mattingly, who added that discussing the subject with the right-hander "was on the agenda."
Broxton walked two consecutive Cubs batters on eight pitches Tuesday night before he was pulled. After pitching a perfect ninth inning Monday night and throwing in the mid-90s, his fastball dropped to the low 90s Tuesday.
He told reporters after the game he felt fine, but Mattingly suspected something was wrong. He just wasn't sure how long Broxton has been experiencing pain.
"He didn't give a length of time that it was bothering him," Mattingly said. "I told him it's honorable that he wanted to come in and pitch, but in the end it's not fair to him or anyone else.
"I think they're going to do some testing and we'll go from there...We'll shut him down until we see the results. It's too quick to say whether it will be a DL situation."
Until Broxton is able to pitch again, right-hander Vicente Padilla, who has one save and a 1.80 ERA in five games, will take over the closer's role with Hong-Chih Kuo, Mattingly said.
Broxton, who has seven saves but a 5.68 ERA in 14 games, will be replaced on the Dodgers roster with RHP Kenley Jansen, recalled from Double-A Chattanooga on Friday.
Jansen started the season with the Dodgers and is winless with a 7.43 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
